Maintain a Website for charity
A strong website can keep your funders informed about your work, attract additional funding, raise awareness of the issues you are championing and provide, staff, clients and management a focal point to deliver your message and get people involved in your work. What makes a good charity website?
- What are your objectives – your mission if you prefer. A one line statement of the objectives of the organisation (or specific project) will help people to understand and understand your aims.
- Blogs, Podcasts, YouTube – Use the media that is available and current. It helps to show that you are keeping the organisation up to date and relevant.
- How can people help? Can they get involved? If you want a donation, then make it easy for them to donate and be specific about what you will use the money for.
- Photos of who or what they will help to achieve, people help people. Help the people who visit your site identify with your cause or project.
- Call to Action: If you want people to do something as a result of visiting your website then say so. Make it easy for them. Add a Donate button prominently on the site
- Publish good news, the amount raised, the hits on your site, the progress and achievements of your project. Keeping your site current and up to date will help you achieve better placement in search engines
- Social Media: Get onto twitter. Do it NOW! Tell people what you do, add links to your website, every news story, every event put a link onto twitter and help people help you. Follow me on Twitter @iictpete and I will forward your name and organisation to all my followers, follow other organisations and let them follow you.
- Google Places: Register your organisation on Google places, its free and it goes to the top of page!
- Let people keep in touch, Form a Facebook group, let people follow you on Twitter, create a news letter. Tell people your news, your achievements and how their support has made a difference.
- Get your site noticed. Link to other sites in the local area and get them to link to your web site. Optimise your site so that it will score highly in a search engine. (email pete@illuminateict.org.uk we have a course running soon)
